About the Project

Children's Lives at Colonial London Town: The Stories of Three Families is a digital storybook about real people who once resided in London Town, Maryland. Its creation is a collaborative effort between elementary school teachers from Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Maryland, the Center for History Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), and Historic London Town and Gardens. The project was funded by the Teaching American History Grant Program through the U.S. Department of Education. The book was researched and written through graduate coursework at UMBC, under the direction of Dr. Marjoleine Kars, chair and associate professor of history. Lisa Robbins, director of education at Historic London Town and Gardens, and Mary Davis, Anne Arundel County Public Schools resource teacher, provided research support.

This website, designed for students, teachers, families and the community, provides:

  • Access to the storybook and sources that were used to create the narratives;
  • Classroom and enrichment activities to further student understanding and appreciation of the colonial period;
  • A navigation and instruction guide;
  • Easy-to-use interactive glossary of important terms in the story;
  • Links to additional resources and places of interest;
  • Timeline of events occuring in London Town, Maryland, and the American colonies;
  • Map of London Town showing the family residences over time.
  • Foodways at Colonial London Town guide to eating habits and cooking practices, cookbook of authentic recipes, and classroom-ready lesson plans.
