Chores, Chores, Please Don't Give Me Any More!

If James was not working in the fields, he no doubt helped tend the family's livestock, which likely included chickens, cows, and pigs. Being close to the South River, James and Larkin, on occasion, might have put down their chores to watch wagons full of hogshead barrels being driven down Scott Street to the dock. The barrels were then loaded onto a small boat, and rowed out to larger ships anchored in the South River. Despite all of their chores, the children still found time for fun and games, such as playing marbles, Nine Men's Morris, jacks, dominos, tag, and even fishing.

This project was developed through a Teaching American History Grant partnership between Anne Arundel County Public Schools, the Center for History Education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and Historic London Town and Gardens.
