Rations - But I Need More!

Servant's Meal
A servant's meal

Jacob looked forward to his scanty, daily ration of salted fish and corn mush or corn cakes. These provisions would be shared among the servants in the Brown household. It was not unusual for Jacob to go to bed hungry. On occasion, Mary might have tried to sneak Jacob a leftover snack.

Although he was young, Jacob might have helped Sall or other slaves tend to a small garden at the end of the day to supplement their diet. He may have also trapped small animals or fished when he had the opportunity.
