When it was time for William to depart, Jacob and William Gray hauled his trunk down to the dock. By the time the trunk was delivered, the entire Brown family was gathered together to wait for the shallop that would take William to the schooner anchored out in the deeper channel of the South River.
Amid the clamor and bustle at the dock, hogshead barrels were rolled down the wharf, shallops were loaded and unloaded, ferry passengers hurried around, and workers shouted to one another. After the Brown family said goodbye, William stepped into the shallop. Perhaps Jacob watched from afar, as William boarded the ship that would take him across the ocean.
