Slavery in America
Slavery in America

Members of Hannah's social class could afford some help, and Hannah owned an enslaved girl named Sarah, who had been recently separated from her mother. Richard Hill, the owner of Sarah's mother, Jemma, had taken to Madeira. When buying and selling slaves most masters thought nothing of breaking up their families. They just treated them as property. Sarah would have had numerous domestic responsibilities, like washing, mending, and ironing clothes. She would have performed other chores, such as gathering eggs, tending to the livestock, and cleaning. Sarah would have been required to do whatever Hannah's family asked of her, although she may well have resisted their demands on occasion for various reasons.

In what ways might Sarah have resisted the demands made of her by the Hill family members?
